2. National Defense

• Many anthropologists link the origin of government to warfare. Early communities were forced to protect themselves from raids by outsiders and to organize raids themselves. The federal government has been responsible for our country’s defense since the Revolutionary War. While our defense budget diminished with the breakup of the USSR, national defense is still a primary responsibility of the federal government.
